Okay, I am still trying to figure this one out.

I have downloaded DVD Shrink and also DVD Decrypter in an attempt to rip my dvd's onto my pc for backup. Managed to rip one, but it doesn't actually play. It's saved to the harddrive and only opens as the video and audio files - it will not play in WinAmp, Windows Media, etc. The drive is a DVD-RW so it should rip my dvd's onto my pc.

What am I missing?

DVD video is stored as VOB files and that's what DVD Shrink will have dumped them to your hard drive as. DVD Shrink is intended for people who want to rip a copy of their DVD to their hard drive then burn back to disc again to play in their DVD player, it's not designed to turn DVDs into files that can be easily played back on a PC the way you're trying to do. That said, you can play VOB files on your PC using something like Media Player Classic:

I use both all the time. You have to tell Shrink to output an ISO image, (say, to your desktop) not files!!. Then you just burn that iso image using decrypter to a blank dvd. No problems whatever. The resulting dvd disc will play in your dvd player or PC.

When you rip a DVD you seperate the files from the assembler that is propriatary software that cannot be copied, so you end up with a bunch of files your operating system doesnt know what to do with, they need to be reassembled and burned back to a DVD to actually use.
