Generally, when guinea pigs do that sound, it's one of two things. They are either nervous/scared of the situation that they happen to be in, or they are jovial and are very happy in the situation they are in. If they start to make a clicky sound like they are eating tape, they are scared. If not, they are happy.

Did you just get these guinea pigs
Did they always do this?
if you answered yes to both of these questions that means they probably have a hurt back. it most likely has nothing to do with you because you said they sit on their laps. DON'T PANIC! there are ways to help your guinea pigs if they are really important to you. call your vet. some vets can help small animals and others can't. if the one that you go to doesn't help small animals there are special vets that help small animals. but, if you are sure their back isn't hurt, one of them could be having babies. if they start gaining weight they are defiantly having babies. one last thing you could do is watch them. if they fight they are probably not getting along. you should then separate them if they are living together. the last thing i can say is that some animals just don't like to be petted. good luck with your guinea pigs and enjoy them. just to let you know (you might know this all ready) Guinea pigs live up to nine years so if you take good care of them they will live for a long time.

Guinea pigs are vocal animals. Some sounds are:

Wheek - A loud noise that sounds about the same as its written form. An expression of general excitement, it can mean "feed me", "pay attention", or possibly "I'm hurt". It is sometimes used to find other guinea pigs if they are in a run. If a guinea pig is lost, it may "wheek" for assistance.

Rumbling - This sound is related to Guinea pig dominance or in response to an unfamiliar sound. It can also come as a response to comfort or content. Whilst courting, a male usually purrs deeply, while swaying from side to side, nearly lifting the rear feet.

Chattering - This sound is made by rapidly gnashing the teeth together—it is a warning to others to keep away. Guinea pigs tend to raise their heads when making this sound so as to look more dangerous.

Tribbling, Bubbling, or Purring - This rather pleasant sound is made when the guinea pig is enjoying itself, usually when being petted or brushed. They may also make this sound when grooming, crawling around to investigate a new place, or when given an unexpected food "treat", like lettuce or carrots.

Popcorning - "Popcorning" refers to a particularly loud "wheek" that is accompanied by a hop, either high or short. A guinea pig that "popcorns" is feeling full of energy, or is very pleased. This is also known as "jumping for joy".

It's probably what is referred to as a guinea pig's "content noise". They are happy and content with you petting them.

That's called purring, it's a happy sound.

Don't feed them carrots, it can cause fatty liver disease, and all lettuce will do is give them diarea.
