First of all you have to be producing electricity. The meter goes both ways. If you are generating enough electricity for your own needs and have left over, it will turn your meter backwards to reflect the power you are putting into the system.

This would reflect in your favor on their readings and they would owe you. Most don't generate enough power for this, most generate enough power to have a much lower electric bill.

Ways for generation of electricity are hydro, wind, solar so what you need will be different in each case. There are companies that specialize in each of these fields who will be far better able to assess your needs and make recommendations.

A good lawyer.

But seriously, you should check with the state and local laws regarding selling electricity back to the power company. Some states won't allow it - one reason is that it could endanger linemen working on power lines by backfeeding the system. Some states allow it, but you have to pay fees and the power company pays you a smaller price for your electricity.

In any event, you will either have to have a meter that runs backwards, or some will require a second meter that monitors outgoing electricity. Again, there should be some information available from your state.
