It really depends on what set of skills you've got to work with. There are numerous places to get contractual type work, doing programming, web design, and even simply writing. A good strategy might be...
1) Sign up with a certification site and start taking all of the FREE tests that you think you can pass. This will help you build a reputation and trust and help you land contracts for work.
2) Sign up with a free escrow service that acts as a go-between for workers and those hiring them. Most will have a rating system similar to eBay's feedback, and as your rating grows, you will get more jobs, but you have to start by bidding low, and putting some effort into well-thought-out cover letters so that the potential employer gets a good impression.

Finally, once your set of skills builds, you could launch your own website and start writing articles, offering download-able files for sale, selling subscriptions for more features to registered users, and so on. Plus you can derive extra income from affiliate programs (Amazon, eBay, etc) and Google AdSense.

If you want to get "rich quick overnight" ignore my answer, I make money by putting in the time and effort.. To try to be helpful I will share how I make extra money at home from my computer. None of the things that I do cost me any money to start
(1) I make a little extra money by doing simple things like surveys, "reading emails", etc. I spend about an 1/2 hour a night doing this. I prefer "reading emails" because it takes less time, I just visit a link that is provided and wait for a timer to expire and move onto another link.
(2) I sell items on a auction site. Most of my items comes from yards sales, flea markets, discount bins at local stores, etc. I sell larger items locally, less shipping charges etc. Most customers will gladly pick up the items. Sometimes I buy items from the local site just to sell on other auction sites. Also
(3) Real money can be made by having your own website / blog. It takes a little time and effort but if correctly done correctly, you can make extra money even when you are off the computer. That is the best thing about the Internet, it is open 24/7 and available worldwide
