I just saw at KTVU web site, that FDA fined Red Cross 4.2 Million Dollars for violating blood safety laws.
Red Cross is a non profit organization supported by people's donations. These donations meant for spending for people in need, not to pay for Red Crosss's legal fees of fines.
Wouldn't it be better if they invastigate and convict Red Cross employees who did the crime and fire them and put them in jail, instead of taking Red Cross funds?

Both can be done.

Fining the organization is one thing. If the employees were acting in a criminal manner, nothing stops those separate prosecutions.

Time for a reality check.

First, no disease has been traced to any of these violations. The violations are failure to follow FDA rules that might be a little odd, specifically they didn't ask everyone all the questions on the FDA's list. Second, the Red Cross makes an huge amount of money on their blood business, so in this respect it is nothing more than a regular corporation, whose profits I am sure do not go to help the public. Third, if there was any disease traced to the violations, the Red Cross would be sued and those people would recover damages.

In summary, NO crime was committed, NO one was injured, NO HIV, and no charitable works will be eliminated by paying those fines.

Since I don't think the Red Cross is very honest, I am all in favor of the government going after them and reducing their profits.

GOOD THOUGHT, but the Red Cross is a major Corporation and a major supplier of Blood. Non-profits have competition, there is little more they can do.

I have a question in response to your question.

Would it not be better to give that same fine money to the people that now are HIV positive, along with a loaded gun and a get out of jail free card.

These people in "need". Are now in more need than ever before. Will putting even one responsible person in jail, give them their lives back?

I questioned this myself when it was announced and then Red Cross came back and announced that these fines would come out of their operating funds and not out of donations. DUH! am I missing something here?
