Very little. The sales technique is called "value added" and it's meant to get customers to buy because they think they're getting more for their money. The fact is they are paying more for what they really want or need and have a bunch of "crap", as you so accurately assessed, that they will probably never use that cost nothing. But since we have been brainwashed into believing that "he who dies with the most toys wins" this practice won't change anytime soon.

A life which is substantial, that is it exists on its own. You find a hapiness that is not so transient as what others find. And conversely you can find sadness in the sameway. Your life depends more on your own state of mind and less on the fortuitous or unfortuitous circumstances life will throw your way.
