I saw the movie, but heard the book is way better. "Memoirs of a Geisha". The same with "The da Vinchi code". I personally like reading religous books. Bible, quran, Living Religions, Poetry by Rumi.

The book of flying - keith miller (fantasy quest - poetic)
The floating book - M Lovric (for those who love books for being books with some romance too)
The year of our war - steph swainston (sci/fantasy basically about a war with insects....quite a surprise to find it so classy in its style)
The king of elf-land's daughter - lord dunsany (classic of classic fantasies...love and purpose and poetic)
I could go on and on....

Oh - and don't forget Evelyn Waugh (if you're looking for a short snappy and cut-throat-hilarious read, try "the loved one" - it is my loved one :) )
