This may be nothing as long as the fish is eating and acking normal it will be fine. As far as bringing the fish to a Vet. I would say stop and think how much money are you willing to spend on a fish? Buy a new one don't mean to be cruel but the facts are simple a vet bill for a fish could be hundreds and the fish cost you what maybe $3.98- $6.98

Black on a goldfish can also mean he is bruised. My goldfish jumped out of the tank years ago and a day later he was black all over due to the fall. It took a couple of weeks before it disappeared. Four years on, he still alive.

It could be ammonia burns or natural color change.
If you are housing him in anything under what is recomended, then its probably ammonia burns, upgrade his tank and tank cleaning schedule. More details need to be given tho. What size tank is he in, and how often do you do partial waterchanges and if you test his water what are the ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate readings?

PEOPLE R SO STUPID THESE DAYS!!!
No, your fish is not going to die, and you don't have to take it to the emergency room like all these idiots say. It is either a new coloration mark or fungus. Put a Fungus Gone tablet in. If nothing happens and your fish is ok, it is just coloration.

What type is your fish? It may just be regular marks that appear when that kind of fish reaches maturity. If that isn't natural, I would ask a vet.
