"Enders Game," Orson Scott Card
I really like Scott's books though they get redundant... seemingly always a child prodigy.
"Neuromancer," William Gibson
The book that set off a new genre in SF
"The Diamond Age," Neal Stephenson
Another very original book that introduced nanotech.
"Elixir," Gary Baxter
A well written thriller
"The Sparrow," Mary Doria Russell
A first contact novel unlike the others.

Robin Hobb's books. The series begins with Assassin's Apprentice: Fitz is the illegitimate child of a prince. At age six, his mother's father returns him to his royal father to be raised. His father turns him over to the stablemaster, Burrich, to foster. Fitz has an old power to mentally bond with an animal, which Burr (a good man in all other ways) is emphatically against.
Quote:
The skies of this world were always meant to have dragons. When they are not there, humans miss them. Some never think of them, of course. But some children, from time to time when they are small, they look up at a blue summer sky and watch for something that never comes. Because they know. Something that was suppose to be there faded and vanished. Something we must bring back, you and I. - Golden Fool by Robin Hobb

Try Stephan Kings books. He has quite a few short stories, a lot of novels and also has the Dark Tower series. If you choose to read the dark tower series make sure you start with the first one and they are very long for the most part.
