Alonso is now relegated to start tomorrow's GP in tenth for blocking Massa. Is this over the top?

The officials were following the rules. I don't think it's over the top.
I was watching the live timing on formla1.com and I did notice that Felipe, who seems to really have come of age and been setting consistently fast laps (faster than Michael most of the weekend), only did a mediocre final flying lap. Usually, the final lap in the qualifying is when everybody sets their fastest lap. I was fully expecting Felipe to post some "green" (personal best) and even some "purple" (best out of all in the session) sector times, but he was nowhere near his best. I was wondering what had happened. Getting blocked by Alonso who was on his outlap makes sense. So yes, I think Massa did actually suffer as a result of Alonso.

Well over the top.
This is an outrageous abuse to the sport, to Renault and to Fernando's person. I mean... I saw a photo of the driver after the decision and he was absolutely devastated.

I still can't figure out this has happened...
It's that damaging...

I don't know how he blocked Massa.
Did he block him by giving him a tow? No Sir.
Plus Ferni was doing an out-lap on the limit to have a chance of starting a final flyer.

I can't see why this decision was taken. Other than to help Cheaterific MS win the championship.

No, it's just the rules. Schumacher got relegated in a previous race, just like a lot of other drivers.

Those rules, however, are applied depending on the opinions of the race organizers and are subject to justification.

schumy was in the same situation a few rAces ago, beeing penalised for stopping alonso in qualifications. whta goes around come around. YES, he should have been punished.
Masa was in a timed lap, while alonso was just out the pits

Well...the FIA deemed it and it's to SchMACKER'S benefit.....par for the course to manipulate the season!!
YAWN!!
They took 8 hours to come to a decision about Rascasse Gate, when it was patently obvious to everyone it WAS A VERY DELIBERATE ACT!!
Alonso - the stewards couldn't decide if it was deliberate or not,but give the penalty anyway......
