Not those games (I haven't played them), but when playing a first-person shooter where the character I am controlling runs to the edge of a ledge or something, I often experience a sudden fear just like looking down from a great height myself.

a better word for what you are decribing is probably motion sickness. and it's likely you got this because you were playing while on a moving vehicle.

the same will happen if you read.

the reason this happens is because your ears have this balancing thing they do for your body. to tell you which way is up or down. and your body will tell your brain you're moving... but since your eyes are sitting still, focused on a game/book, your eyes tell your body that you are not moving. your brain gets all confused, and motion sickness is the result.

the opposite can happen as well. when your eyes tell your brain that your body is moving, but all other signs in your body swear to god that you are sitting still. again, confusion results in motion sickness
