I ask because I saw that in Michael Moore's new documentary, he has Canadians talking about how they are afraid to go into the U.S. because the health care system would charge them in an emergency.

This brought up the obvious question; would the Canadian system charge me?

Still reeling over the "rude Canadians" comment. I thought we were known to be fairly nice people, but I guess some people don't think so.

As for your question, I think what they meant by Canadians afraid to visit a hospital in the U.S., is that in Canada, no one can be refused treatment at any hospital. Everyone has health insurance here, but if you don't keep up your premiums, you still cannot be refused medical care. Usually what happens is after you are treated, they start you with a new health care number, and you are expected to pay the premiums. There is no such thing here as not being able to afford to go to a Doctor, unless you are looking at cosmetic surgery or something along that line. We always hear horror stories about people dying in the U.S. because they could not afford an operation or were turned away from a hospital because they didn't have insurance. That can't happen here.
But if a US citizen comes here, without travel insurance, they will receive a bill from the hospital. That applies to any non-canadian.
I never travel to the US even for the weekend without purchasing travel/health insurance.

They would charge you, but if it was an emegency, and you had no health care, they would probably not push for payment, unless they did surgery, and then, the cost would be far less than in the states. There are people from thestates coming to Canada all the time because they can't afford theprice of proceedures in the US. My daughter is a nurse at an urgent care centre, and she has some regular customers for proceedures from the states. For instance, I broke my leg. It would havecost me $450 Canadian for consultation, xrays, and a walking cast here, but would be well over $1000 in the States, even with insurance

^^^ LMAO!!^^^

Hmmm ... strange that you would make a remark like that "myother" ... seeing since it is Americans that are generally seen as "rude" by others. Guess this is why Canadians are advised to wear "Canadian" pins ... so that other countries know we are, in fact, Canadian ... and not American. If they know we are Canadian ... they treat us with respect. Put that in your pipe and smoke it .... Mr. rude dog!!

On topic: Yes, unless you have insurance coverage ... you would be charged. We, as Canadians, pay into our health care system thru taxes ... as well as a monthly premium. It wouldn't make sense for us, as Canadians, to pay the tab for Americans would it?

My aunt went to a tropical location, on holidays. A tidal wave hit her and threw her up against a vehicle ... shattering her hip. She was in bad shape, and had to be hospitalized for quite a while. It's a good thing she had insurance ... she would have been refused treatment or would be thousands of dollars in debt if she hadn't been smart and purchased accident insurance.

Of course they would charge you and you cannot gurantee the quality of healthcare you get...depending on what it is, you may have a long wait too.....bottom line is if you do a little research, you can afford healthcare in the US. Get the book "Healthcare for Less" by Michelle Katz...read it and apply her "rules"...you can get good healthcare at a discount with a little effort.....you just have to know where those resources are and what questions to ask and read everything.....the book is available at Barnes and Noble, amazon etc....now getting your pharmaceutcals is a different story....read this book and you will know what I am talking about.

Your American insurance policy should pick up the tab or most of it. If you do not have insurance, you are SOL.

Depends, your health insurance may cover it. I would get the travel insurance, it's not very much.
