Probably you can. You gave yahoo your gender in your profile. You can edit your core profile (I think by going to "http://edit.yahoo.com/config/eval_profile" while logged in) and change your gender there. Then your avatar should show the gender you've chosen. At least I think so; I haven't tried this, as I'm happy w/the gender I chose. :)
So, if you made a mistake, or simply want to try on another gender for awhile, that may be the way to do it...
p.s.: Oh, and as another answer says (one given while I was originally writing this and trying to figure out how you could do it), you can go into the avatars page (http://avatars.yahoo.com) and use the "preferences" link under the help (in the upper-right corner).
