I worked with someone like that. I bided my time, and when I was in the middle of the most hectic, crisis-filled, mission critical crunch and this cretin started up criticising the way I was working - the next time I saw my boss I let slip that my job was hard enough without having my attention grabbed by some slacker armchair-quarterbacking my every move.
Timing is everything...and make your complaints job-related, not personal.

There are always going to be "backstabbers" in life. You may be one of the most hard-working and nicest people on the Earth, and someone will always be going behind your back for some reason. Most people that act like this will get themselves caught like a mouse in a trap, as they are covering up for the fact that they are unwilling or unable to do their jobs; and figure the kissing..... will cover up their low job performance. You learn to ignore it, do your job to the best of your ability and just soar with the eagles; even if you work with a turkey! People who are very insecure with themselves act this way, just pretend you don't even know that it is going on; it is less stressful this way. If he is making comments that could hurt your standing at the job, go to your boss or the HR department.Good luck and have a good day.

I don't associate with brown-nosers and with people who are two-faced. I would avoid this person as much as possible, and refuse to socialize with him. Make it obvious that you are interested in having discussions with everyone else except for him. Walk right pass him and treat him as if he is of no importance to you. If he speaks, speak back and continue what you were doing. Don't give him the benefit of information because he will take whatever enegery you give him and use it against you. Act as if he is Invisible!

there is one of those in just about every work place. I would imagine that he doesn't have any (true) friends and that he is a very unhappy person, even if he doesn't show it. I would feel sorry for him, and pray for him to get some help. Seriously pray for him, because that is what he needs

He talks crap about other people to make himself look good to the boss. To make himself standout from the crowd.
Don't worry, people like that tend to get theirs in the end.
