my neighbor gave me a bush and called it a butterfly bush, but when i looked it up online, it showed something different, the petals are bluish white, and they take the shape of a butterfly. could you please if you know the name could you tell me and possibly show a picture so i could compare.

The plant that is known by the common name of "butterfly bush" is the Buddleia. I have attached a link to a great information page. The person you received the plant from may have called it butterfly bush as it is known to attract butterflies.

It can't be Buddleia because that gets its butterfly name from its attractiveness to butterflies NOT because it has butterfly-shaped flowers. Traditionally, the butterfly shape has been used to describe flowers of pea plants but you may not be taling abouit a pea flower. The big problem is that the same common name can be applied to numerous species ... often ones completely unrelated to each other.

The one shown at the link is the closest to your description that I could find (and I found LOTS of different things called Butterfly Flowers). So your plant is probably Clerodendron ugandense or at least a Clerodendron species.

It sounds like you might have a cyclamen. They look like butterflies. A butterfly bushes leaves and flowers don't resemble butterflires though but the flowers do attract butterflies.

That sounds like a Gaura It has little flowers that look like upside down butterflies. Its one of my favorite perennials.
