I believe that has to do with a change in the seasons and how they relate to the visible constellations. One would expect the fire sign to correspond to the hotter months. One would expect the earth sign to correspond to the fertile months. The Air sign to the windier or brisker months. The Water sign to the wetter months. That's just a guess however.

It is thought people of these different signs possess different virtues and vices, for example...

Fire - Positive and extroverted
Earth - Realistic, cautious, hard-working and dependable
