Yes, you didn't do this the easiest way, but I'll start from where you started to do things incorrectly. When you calculate 30 divided by 8 (not 8 divided by 30), you have 3 whole numbers, and 8 X 3 is 24.

30 - 24 = 6

So you have 3 and 6/8.

6/8 can reduce (divide top and bottom by 2) to 3/4,

So the final answer is 3 and 3/4.

All you do is this:
3/4+6/2
=3/4+12/4
=15/4

15/4 is the improper fraction answer.
3 & 3/4 is the mixed number answer.

Yeah...you don't need a proper fraction. You'll get a mixed number.
But passed this introductory course, it'll probably be best off just using a simplified improper fraction.

3/4 = 0.75

6/2 = 3.0

0.75 + 3.0 = 3.75
