Never tell a child there is no Santa Claus. Keep them believing because that's the beauty of it. Eat the cookies they leave out, and drink the milk. A child will not enjoy Christmas that much if there isn't even a hope that Santa is real. When your daughter sees that Santa isn't real, things will be easier to tell her that he isn't true. Usually at 6th grade they will understand.

You may not have to. Her friends, other adults, etc. may tell her for you. Then you have the hard task of deciding what to tell her... Depending upon her age, the answer might be different. Most importantly, tell her that *you* don't believe there is a Santa, vs. there is no Santa. Then she can choose whom to believe.

Also, why do you feel the need to tell her? Santa is an idea; a symbol. Santa is an embodiment of the hopes and dreams of children that want a magical being that knows what they want and to bring those gifts to them, as long as they've been good and really want it.

I never had to actually tell my daughter, she got old enough to realize on her own and from the older kids saying it at school that there wasn't really a Santa. Lots of kids don't want their parents to know they don't believe, they are afraid that they won't get presents anymore, so they just play along for a few more years.

You don't need to.
Most likely, she has it all figured out.

When my daughter came to ask me (she is now 10, but was about 6 at the time), I told her that I did not think that Santa is a real person, but that the spirit of it is very much alive. Then, I added that it is her choice to "believe" in Santa, fairies and imaginary friends, and that I could not see what harm that would be.

Since, we are in a mutual agreement that we "believe" in Santa... HOHOHO!!!

First of all ask her if she knows who Santa is? She may be smarter thanyou give her credit for, Ask her if she believes in Santa. If she does let her believe as long as she can we grow up too fast too soon. Fantasy is great for the imagination. Let her be a child.

How old is she? I am assuming she is still young enough to believe. Don't tell her. Eventually, with time she will get it. Let the little ones beliveve for as long as they can. There is so much out there today that is ugly. Let them belive if they still can. I don't think it hurts anyone. My kids got it over time. They knew without me telling them when they were old enough and they were ok with it. In fact, we still put out gifts that are from Santa. It is a gift that only I know about and my two teenagers love it.

Have someone dressed as Santa show up on Christmas and drop off the presents and then "reveal" himself as uncle bob or whoever. Surprise, there is no Santa, but there are still presents. It will soften the blow.

you should actually tell us how old your daughter is... cuz at a young age you don't want to admit to that... I still believed in Santa in grade 6... it was traumatizing finding out from the teacher, she made like a public announcement to the classroom... (at that time I was pretending he never existed)

Hey, wait a minute! I am 37 years old and you are telling me there is no real Santa? The next thing you're going to tell me, there is no such thing as the Easter Bunny!
