Lets do this in International time (or military time)
10:15am = 1015
3:50pm = 1550

1550-1015 = 535 or 5 hours and 35 minutes

I can show you how using military time will help you solve this problem as well as any other "time" problem your teacher can think of, or you can make up yourself.

Military time is also called 24-hour time. There is no AM or PM. Everything seems the same when talking about the morning hours: 9:00AM = 0900, 10:15AM = 1015. Noon [12:00, when the sun is high in the sky] = 1200.

When we reach 1:00PM, military time looks different because 1:00PM is called 1300. The 13 is the hour - the 13th hour in the day, the 00 is the minutes, in this case zero minutes.

In military time, just like civilian time, there are 60 minutes in an hour.

So, if it is 1350, what time will it be in 10 minutes?

First, ad the minutes together: 50 + 10 = 60, so the minutes reset to 00
and the hour increase from 13 to 14

1350 + 10 minutes = 1400

So let's work your problem.

Robert finished at 3:50PM.
3:50PM in military time is what?
The 50 stays the same, and we add 3 + 12 to find the hour
3:50PM = 1550

Robert started at 10:15AM.
10:15AM in military time is what?
The 15 stays the same, and because it is in the morning the 10 stays the same too.
10:15AM = 1015

To find out how long Robert rode, we need to subtract Robert's start time from his finish time.

In civilian time this looks weird:

3:50 PM
- 10:15 AM
= ??:??

In military time this looks much simpler:

1550, that is 15 hours and 50 minutes
- 1015 , that is 10 hours and 15 minutes
= ????

Remember subtract the minutes first, so that is you need to carry an hour over you can. In this case you do not need to carry an hour over.

50 - 15 = ??

Now subtract the hours.

15 - 10 = ??

It took Robert ?? hours and ?? minutes to ride 37 miles.

[answer: 5 hours, 35 minutes]

What if Robert started at 10:50AM and finished at 3:15PM

10:50AM = 1050
3:15PM = 1515

1515
-1050

We need to borrow an hour to do the minutes subtraction

1515 = 1475 [decrease the hours by 1: 15 - 1 = 14, increase the minutes by 1 hour or 60 minutes: 15 + 60 = 75]

1475
- 1050
= 4 hours, 25 minutes.

14 minus 10 for the hours, 75 minus 50 for the minutes.

YOU CAN DO THIS!!!!! :):):)

Oh - you use time subtraction all through life, like figuring out how long you worked today!

5 hours and 35 minutes...there is no math to this problem what is so hard about it. If it makes it easier take a clock and count the hours and minutes on it.
