There is no land mass at the geographic north pole (the magnetic north pole is moving, it was in Canada, now on its way to Russia), so the North Pole is over pack ice that drifts -- not a good place for habitation. There is a bunch of international hub-bub over who owns the North Pole, which really is moot since NO ONE lives there. The only reason there is any discussion is concern over mineral (like oil) rights.

No one lives at the North Pole. I guess this is because the North Pole is on top of a fairly thin layer of floating ice, which tends to move around and crack.
However, some people live at the South Pole:
