Guess you are talking about Revolutionary War. About one-third of Americans favored the war and the Continental Army was formed by volunteers from this group. We did not have draft.

The Continental Army led by George Washington was formed from volunteers from across the 13 colonies. Mostly farmers and small tradesmen, they fought with mostly their own weapons and were paid randomly at best.
