A cleft pallet occurs when a chromosome for forming the mouth has defects from BOTH parents. Cleft pallets occur 1 in 500 births and are very fixable. A number of birth defects are caused by smoking but cleft pallets arent. Athsma, low birth weight and preterm labour are the most common side effects. I smoked in both my pregnancies....both my children are fit as fiddles. It is your choice whether to quit or not...do it when YOU are ready not what some of these clowns think your ready. Good Luck

Im not sure what causes a cleft pallet. I know the mouth is one of the last things to form and that is why some babies are perfectly normal otherwise but may have cleft pallets and "hair lips" They can sort these things out these days I wouldnt worry. But if your smoking while pregnant. STOP!

I don't know if it will cause cleft palate, but it causes more than enough problems where it doesn't really matter. Stop smoking!

Are you honestly just worried about this? There are a whole list of adverse side effects and you are worried that the baby will look deformed? Just because it won't be obvious to everyone else, doesn't make it any less of a problem. SMOKING IS BAD for a baby's health. Not just for the next 9 months, but for their life.

There are way to many sites for information to sit here asking these questions.

You should not drink alcohol, smoke and read medications that says not good for during your pregnancy. It'll lead your baby premature, deformed, and end up with those special Ed. classes.

You should never smoke when you are pregnant, let alone shouldn't smoke in general. You shouldn't drink alcohol when you are pregnant either. If you are doing either one, please stop!
