I get many junk mailings to my Yahoo account ever since I signed up for free coupons. Recently, I have received a few phishing, identity theft mailings. My Yahoo address has been spread out, and exposed to entire public, I believe it is safe to close this particular account. Is there any things that I shoud be aware of...to prevent myself to redusing the risk to be targeted?

This is very much a case of Prevention is Better Than Cure.

As the reponses above say, there is not a great deal you can do to stop this.

The lesson here is to become educated about how these things start. You know what you did that "seeded" all the spam. Be cautious in the future about giving you email address or any other personal information.

You may need to abandon your present email address and get a new one.

There is no way to prevent all spam. But you can lesson the frequency by not giving you address, and NEVER open email from someone you don't know. Delete it, or mark it spam.

There is a better solution to closing the account. Get Firefox with Google Toolbar. The Google Toolbar has a built in feature called Google Safe Browsing. It will warn you when you visit a phishing scam e-mail.

Download Firefox with Google Toolbar here:

I also recommend you get Mozilla Thunderbird. It warns you when you click on suspicious links in a phishing e-mail;

There's little that you can do about those. Unless the originated on the Yahoo system, there's nothing that Yahoo can do either. BTW, the "From:" address is always spoofed on SPAM. Even if it looks like it came from a Yahoo address, it's a certainty that it did not.

Just delete them and forget about them.

Yahoo already knows about them and there isn't much they can do,other then block addresses, but the phisers just make up new ones. It's unfortunate, but t he only thing to do is block and delete from your end.

mail-abuse@yahoo-inc.com

This is the address you send for phishing or any other problems.
