Do racists really think their race is superior or that all other races fit neatly in one, simple catagory? Do they lead extremely sheltered lives? Have they never met a person of another race that destroys their prejudice?

Who knows why some people are like they are. Just do your best to expose them to different races and cultures and hope they become less prejudiced.

I think I could probably go on for days talking about this. To answer your specific questions: some racists do think their race is superior, some of them do lead extremely sheltered lives (never even leaving the county they live in) and meeting someone from another race would probably not destroy their predjudice unless they were open-minded enough to listen to what that person had to say and see them as a person rather than as a person that looks different from them. But there's all sorts of other stuff that goes with this, there's the whole culture part of it, family culture, local culture, and culture SERIOUSLY effects perspective. And perspective is 90% of reality in my opinion. Do a favor for me, look up the book "Ways of Seeing" it's an art book that talks about the differences in generational perspectives on art, and even though it doesn't deal specifically with racism it's a great example of cultural perspective and social intelligence at work.
Also, if you ever experience predjudice yourself here's a tip: laugh at the person/people doing it-it shows just how unintelligent they are and it really makes them mad because they realize that you don't value their opinion at all, and that you're well grounded in your own identity.

Its something they learnt 'at the knee.' Like religion, manners and minding our little brothes and sisters, parents taught us what, and how to think of everything, including Mrs. Webster down the street.
Since its sometimes a notion shared by an entire community that the child belongs to, (like a religion for example) the thought gets reinforced till it becomes a fact. The racist, prejudiced person ends up never questioning this notion.
They then go about for the remainder of their lives making choices that go with this notion, by either attacking those children in the playground who fit those prejudices (either overweight, or belonging to a particular race, religion, class) or in adult-life, avoiding or secretly ridiculing that society.
Its hard to break out of, its also a way to include ONESELF into a group, by rejecting someone from another type of group (for eg ONLY, the christians are right, so all others have to go to hell like jews, muslims etc etc).
Sometimes I wonder how they can be so close minded, but if you think really hard, you will probably come up with one or another thought that could be offensive or hurtful to someone, somewhere on the planet. In short, we ALL have some unconscious prejudice thats deeply ingrained. It sound great in theory but no one is really free of any and ALL prejudices. Thats utopia.
It all depends on how far we take that prejudice. Its better to live and let live!

Usually it happens when someone's in a situation with someone else of another race. A misunderstanding or misinterpretation it could be. Yes, normally everyone think his/her race is superior. It's like a sports team..you only feel affiliated to your team.

Rasism is fear and/or anger turned on a group of people. It manifests in many ways, superiority, snobishness, or outright hate. It can be on a certain nationality, skin colour, sex or any other thing people can use to seperate themselves from others. But no matter who, when or where it's base is fear.

Racism stems from society itself. The influence from family, friends, and the people in our lifes shape our beliefs as we grow older. Typically, the lesser the education, the greater the chance for racism to exist.

I think that some people have to put others down to feel superior, but in order to hold somebody down you have to stay down there with them. I really don't understand their way of thinking. Since I have known more white people than black people I know more white a**holes than black ones.

The come in all ethnic identities and it's about ignorance by choice, blame and a desperate insecurity. They NEED to have someone to piss on to feel big. Sexism is the same thing - gotta have someone to blame for one's own inadequacies and someone to push around to feel like a man.
