The agitator does move during the wash cycle. The water drains properly, and rinse waster is added. The knob moves to indicate it is in the spin cycle. The water drains, and there is a noise like the machine is operating, however the drum does not spin. So, the clothes are still pretty wet when I move them to the dryer.

Is this something I could attempt to repair myself? If it requires a repairman, how much should I expect to pay? I'm wondering if I should just get a new washer. However, this one is only a few years old.

If anyone has any expertise or experience in dealing with this, I'd sure appreciate your advice. Thanks!

Next time include name and model of washer along with a good description of problem. As it is ==I would take a putty knife and "pop" the deck lid up. Look for your lid switch == do you see 2 wires ?==strip these 2 wires and wire-nut them together==close the deck lid==plug power back in==set the timer to "spin"===working now ?? You have just "by-passed" the safety tub spin switch==the tub will spin with the lid open or closed while in spin cycle. There"s more that it could be==but == this could be "it". You can always put the wires back if it is something else==like a loose drive belt (which I think it does"nt have a belt, but a direct drive coupler) or a bad clutch. Try the easy things first==sometimes the "striker" on the lid has broken off and there is nothing to "push" the lid switch closed when you put the lid down to wash. You could use a small screwdriver to gently push down on the lid switch while the timer is set to spin==doing anything??==if not then by-pass the switch as mentioned before and try it. Good Luck.

It could be just a belt, it could be the transmission. Pay someone to come look at it, anywhere up to 50 just for the visit, and if its a belt, the total bill will be lik 90ish, if its the transmission it could be up to 200. If its farily new check to see if its still on warranty. Good luck.

It sounds like the timing mechanism--the gears within the turning knob--have worn out. You can buy the part for your particular model, but if you don't know what you're doing it may become costly. I recommend a washer/dryer technician do it for you.
