While at Walmart this morning my little one decided to poop so I took her into the restroom but I wasnt sure whether or not to use that changing table thing they got on the wall. So i just reclined her stroller seat and changed her diaper in there. Wasnt sure how dirty that thing was.

In public areas, whether it be one of those changing tables, a counter top, a baby seat in a shopping cart or whatever, I would always wipe it down or put some sort of changing pad under my baby before stripping him naked.

You never know what has been there before you but even with that you have no gaurantee that the surface is clean.

You can carry this to the extreme though. You can't keep all germs away from your child and you don't really want to. If you keep him in too sterile an atmosphere then you open yourself up to a whole lot of other problems such as making him over-sensetive to germs so that he would catch anything going around because he has no resistance to them. That's a whole different problem.

You just have to take some basic precautions but you don't want to over do it. We all have to swallow some dirt during our lifetimes, it's only natural.

Good luck.

It is not an easy thing to put your child on something you don't know what has been there first. when I had to make that decision I would take a wipe to it then I would also put the changing pad that comes in most diaper bags down on it too. may sound extreme to some but not to me the pad i knew was clean and it was a soft for comfort too.

I alwyas wipe it down and then lay a blanket on it if i have to. Otherwise I change him in the stroller. Also, with the shopping carts that have the seat on them for babies, ,i wipe those down too and put a blanket on it, But most of the time I stick my car seat on the cart

First of all bring something like a easy washing blanket with you all the time.
Second, children now a days are kept sometimes to clean and they get no Resistance. So some "dirt" will not harm your child at all.
But I am with you, you never know how other parents keep their baby clean so think ahead and pack your own stuff.

I have used the changing areas in stores, but I have taken my own changing mat to put down first, then I clean it with antibacterial stuff afterwards. My daughter has never suffered by catching anything by doing things this way.

Don't know how sanitary they are. I would recommend change the baby in the stroller or even walking out to your car before changing them on there.

If I used it I would wipe it down and still even put a clean blanket or just a blanket you use only when your changing your child.

I would never opt to use a public baby changing table ever. Never have, never will. I always change my kids in the vehicle. Public changing tables, yucky.
