I first thought it was a risk that he shouldn't have taken but then I heard the commentators say that Zidane had the habit to always kick the penalties the same way on the same side and then Buffon the best goalkeeper of the world knew for sure about that. That's how the Panenka was the only way Zidane found to mislead him and score the goal.
Finally this permits us to see the genius of Zidane that thought about that when we wouldn't have and to understand why he occupies this place and not us.

I understand that sometimes, in the heat of the game, you can lose your head. However, Zidane is a vet. and should have known better, no matter what Materazzi said (something about Zidane's sister, it is now being reported).

i don't care what materazzi said. you DO NOT place four years of work by your team at risk because of what he is saying. sticks and stones. and in the 110th minute too, you have 10 minutes until a shootout, and he is their best pk taker. and if you are sent off, then italy has ten minutes to take advantage of 11 vs. 10. a "real man" is man enough to rise above that, and get back by winning. seriously, zidane ****** it up, and most likely lost the world cup for france. but of course, he has never ever shown the ability to control his temper
