I remember it too from school, I have a first edition of this book i got on pre-order from my middle school bookshop (1982ish) just because it sounded a bit Hobbit/Tolkieny ( i had not long read The Hobbit and was kind of fantasy mad at the time).
Best thing to do is write down the numbers of the moves you are making and the choices you made until you find the one you have missed and get out of the maze.
The second one Citadel of Chaos was my fav, also i see another user commenting on the Lone Wolf books which are simliar, that really took me back i had totally forgotton about those :)

I remember that from when it was first published. It was excellent.
I even entered a competition and won a tabletop game called "Warlock" (which was a bit rubbish) - I had to draw a map of the maze of Firetop Mountain. So in 1982, or whenever it was first published, I'm sure I could have helped you out ... now, however, I doubt it.
Good luck and keep going!

Yep I had the same problem - best thing to do is draw a flow chart, outlining the different options as you come across them. Using this as 'map' you should be able to find your way out.
(Try also DEATH TRAP DUNGEON & HOUSE OF HELL they are the two best books in the series - Also check out the LONE WOLF adventures http://www.projectaon.org/
they are similar game books, but you follow the adventures of one character - VERY GOOD & ADDICTIVE)

been ages since i read that -maybe you need to choose a different option earlier or maybe there are clues you need to pick up on the way to the point youre stuck at. sometimes in these books you have to add numbers together and then go to that page reference.
