About all the people that, to quote the writer's terms, "idolize' celebrities & will follow along with whatever they say" -- I fail to see how (in a broad sense) "celebrities" from the TV & movie realm are much different than those of the political realm. Facts are, to even hear our own President speak, in order to get in you have to sign a loyalty oath! In the USA! This goes way beyond Secret Service needs & no elected official has ever used public speeches in this manner. Here we are in a free country, yet our own President's speeches are less like our elected official speaking and more like some festival for the party faithful with photo & video shoot opportunities--that is, a propaganda rally.
Thus, given this & how his public appearances are then used, isn't GWB a 'celebrity" too? And yet both us regular citizens & even our elected officials just "followed along with whatever" GWB said and into a war. The war which, even as we speak, has its so-called justification falling down around us.
Does the writer object when a blond movie star honey, a TV news show host turned anchor woman, that wrestler guy with the crooked eyebrows, even a famous female porno star, etc, all in the news in the last few months, make similar low level associations with Republicans, their fund raisers, or their causes? If you don't shoot all of those persons into outer space too, then you have two sets of rules.
Did the writer object when Reagan and later Schwarzenegger used star power to get elected as Governor of California?
Now, the US government has done embarrassingly little to clean up let alone rebuild N.O. & Pitt establishes a plan to help. Pitt comes strongly in favor of adoption. I find those things laudable. Other celebrities & politicians (many are Republicians too) have helped awareness of for various medical, social & psychiatric causes, I find that laudable too. Betty Ford helped to destigmatize addition to prescription drugs, Katie Couric brought awareness to colon cancer, even Bob Dole helped even to de-stigmatize & promote pharmaceutical therapy for erectile dysfunction, for goodness sake! Those people (Republicans all) were all using their 'star power' for the greater good.
Cripes, try to be at least a little open minded.
P.S. Has Jennifer Aniston ever even made political statements? Or is her 'sin' just her ex-husband?

i don't think it's the celebrities' problem, because everyone has opinions and the right to free speech. however, i don't understand why people would give a celebrity's opinion any more consideration than that of the average citizen. they may be blessed in the area of acting, dancing, singing, whatever, but that doesn't make them an expert in politics (although some may be)! their opinions are valid, but so are mine and so are those of the homeless guy on the corner. that's the beauty of america: everyone has the equal right to sound smart or stupid. it's up to you who to agree with.
ps i really wish you would have kept that side note out of this. hating people for doing nothing to you personally will not get you anywhere in life.

I agree up to a point. Trouble is that no matter how dumb an opinion is, the person having it has a right to speak it. Besides, there are hundreds of opinions on this site that are as dumb or dumber than these actors/actresses. I imagine that most of them are the ones you refer to in your statement-they idolize celebrities and go along with anything the celebrities say.

Right. Because it's not like they're citizens. Or entitled to have any free speech rights or participate in the political process.
That should be limited only to corporations, and people earning less than $20,000 per year. Because nobody else has the right to express an opinion.

I believe everyone in America has a right to voice their views politically. It is up to the population in general as to whom they choose to listen to and believe. Unfortunately, it does not look good for our country. A majority seems to be less than clear thinking to me. We can only hope they are too wrapped up in themselves to vote.

What do you think about Reagan?
You sound like a fine, upstanding republican.
The kind that of person that chooses to remain uninformed and critical of other peoples' values.
Whatever you think of their values, some of them have already done more for others, than you will ever do.

I'm guessing you're not an American and don't believe in free speech, the people's right to be their own government, and other American values. There have always been charismatic communtity leaders, celebrities and politicians involved in politics in America and that will not stop just because you disagree with their position. Freedom of speech doesn't only apply to people you agree with.

I disagree. They have as much right to express their political view as anyone else does. Just as much as you do to ask this question. Granted, there are alot of idiots out there that value these celebrities opinions more than they should, but we allow people to be stupid.

I understand what you are saying but it would not be right to do that. If you stop one set of people you leave the door open to stop other groups.
