The soul is a concept I have trouble getting my head around.

My shadow's size is dependent upon the position of the sun.

Assuming that by the word 'soul' you meant 'body' that would lead to the more simple, more generic question of:
"why does a shadow change size according to the position of a light source?"

Light travels in a strait line. It can be blocked, reflected, distorted...
Take a well-light room, place a non-transparent table in it, and you'll get a shadow below the table, because the light is being blocked.
As for the size of the shadow compared to the actual object, it simply depends on where the light source is in relation to the-said object.
Mathematically, it's what one calls a projection.
To better picture the idea, draw a square, then another smaller square, then draw a line between each corner of each square (so that's 4 new lines) - you should end up with some kind of odd-looking cube. Extend those last lines until they all join up. The intersection is the light source, and those lines are the path taken by the light. The smaller square being the object, and the larger square being the shadow.
As simple explanations go, I think that's about as best I can do without use google or wikipedia.

If I've completely missed the point of the question, then I have no idea what you're on about.

A shadow is merely the body blocking a source of light and its angle that makes the shadow taller or longer. Nothing more.

Trees block light and the angle of the light in reference to the tree will produce a similar shadow. The same goes for any object taking up space on earth.

When you're walking along in the early evening, your shadow seems much taller than you. If you're feeling a bit scared, as I'm sure the people Led Zeppelin were singing about were, you may seem very small to yourself, you may be thinking that your soul must be bigger, but it's not. The size of your shadow seems much bigger. That's what I think, anyway.

Well since souls are just an idea and not a fact whereas shadows are real and of variable height I would say this question is unanswerable

Most believe blindly and erroneously that their body (shadow) is a real, separated substance and this is what they are and it is much more substantial or "real" than the mysterious and invisible soul. "And as we wind on down the road (of false, human beliefs) our shadows taller than our soul..."

The truth is the body (and the entire universe) is the shadow or expressed image of the mind or soul. When we strive to understand "the piper will lead us to reason." When it is revealed to our understanding, "there walks a Lady who shines white light" you will see we are one, perfect and eternal mind and not separated material bodies that will die.

"The truth will come at last, when all is one and one is all, to be a rock and not to roll" (back into the false human beliefs of a material world and universe ). It is all One Spirit my friend and you, me and all are IT! "There's still time to change the road you're on...." :-)

YOUR SOUL IS REAL BUT SINCE YOU CAN'T SEE IT, IT IS ETERNAL, THUS NOT COMPARABLE TO THE SHADOW OF DARKNESS CAST BY THE SUN AND THE DIMENSIONS OF TIME
