Porcupines mate in late summer and early fall. Porcupines are very vocal during mating season. Males often fight over females. The male performs an elaborate dance and sprays urine over the head of the female. Seven months after mating the female gives birth to a single baby. When the baby is born, its quills are soft. They harden about an hour after birth. The baby is begins to forage for food after only a couple of days. The baby will stay with its mother for about six months.

Porcupines and hedghogs, as eutherian mammals, reproduce by mating and gestating to the birth of fully-formed offspring. You're mixing them up with echidnas and platypi, which are monotremes and lay eggs, and with marsupials, like kangaroos and koalas, which give birth to only partly-formed offspring which then must develop further in the pouch. Eutherians, marsupials, and monotremes are completely separate branches of the mammal phylogeny. Being spiky is an example of convergent evolution rather than a genetic link.

They're mammals and the reproduce sexually and with internal gestation. They're not covered in spines all over, just on the back. The female lays on her back...

The female DOES NOT lay on her back. She lifts her tail, which does not have spines underneath. The males puts his front legs on her back, and yes, he does do it carefully.

They're placental mammals, just like us, and give birth to live babies.
