Seriously. It seems like some radical faction of yahoo answers members feel the need to bash a belief system. I think people who have no belief in something bigger than them are a little narrow viewed, but I sure don't bash them at every turn. What gives?

Wish I knew! Yes, there are a great many cranks on Y!A that bash God and religions, especially Christianity. I suppose many of them are frightened by the idea that spiritual realities, including a Power greater than themselves, might prove more valid than their comfortable physical perceptions.

Main Entry: ig·no·rant
Pronunciation: 'ig-n(&-)r&nt
Function: adjective
1 a : destitute of knowledge or education ; also : lacking knowledge or comprehension of the thing specified b : resulting from or showing lack of knowledge or intelligence

Don't want to insult anyone, but some people simply need to educate themselves. What year is it? That's right. 2006 years ago... Also, if you've ever looked into the eyes of a newborn baby, God is surely there. We have no other explanation.

It's a way of disassociating themselves from their former religions, I suppose. Trying to prove to themselves that they're right. I went through the same sort of thing when I abandoned Christianity, but now I'm content with my beliefs and don't feel the need to insult others'.

Because he's not around to defend himself so he's am easy target. I'm not being a smart alec or something but I bet if he was standing right in frount of people they wouldn't say anything. I htink it's good to believe in something bigger than yourself. It keeps you humble and it's reasuring to know that there's more to life than meets the eye.

I believe in God and I'm glad you do too.

Take care and don't let 'em get to ya.

It would seem that the key reason, if there were to be one that stands out, to any one person, (you can see the divisions forming already, can't you?), is that God is a moral authority. A reading in Genisis tells the reader that even those who allegedly saw, heard, felt God's presence, witnessed miraculous events, were personally, in many ways, "touched," ultimately rejected God, " disbelieving what they had personally witnessed.

He refers to Himself in a numer of unique ways, throughout the stories of the Bible. One way, seen in Genisis, is as a "Husband." Another way is, as a "Father."

In these labels, just as in the names by which He calls people when naming or re-naming them, there is a simplicity, that is, He calls people and things after their chief characteristics. Let's look more closely at these two I've already cited:

A Husband: A husband, according to the Bible, and most human cultures, is one (male) with whom one has a covenant, or contract! The clauses of this social contract are layed out in the Scriptures; A husband is supposed to take responsibility for the welfare of a wife, to provide, not only the financial support, sustinance, but, the moral support, spiritual support, and emotional support of one person, a woman, with whom he has made a vow, to take this one person, only, as his chief and senior partner FOR LIFE! Doesn't this seem as though He is asking a lot of anyone who would wear the title of husband?

Contrary to popular ethics of today? A BINDING agreement, as in "the tie that binds?" That's a tall order, to commit one's self, for life, to one central and all encompassing covenant.

As a Father: Again, you may very well see, by description of the Bible, and of the bulk of human societies, an OBLIGATION, much the same as a husband, in the sense that you have RESPONSIBILITIES!

Any serious student of the sciences of Sociology, which is a spin-off, if you will, from Psychology, will quickly discern that the commonalities are, obligation, committment, responsibility, unwaivering fidelity, in the minds of some, issues of someone having (over us) authority, the power of judgement, ( ! ), you, undoubtedly, know, by now.

The human spirit simply rebels at these concepts because they mean that, ultimately, we are not in charge of anything, not even ouselves, our destiny, our place in the order of the universe. In the first book of the Bible, Genisis, God lays out the key reason for the Flood; "every man doing what was right, in his own sight."

I would cite two very important quotations that most "Christians" seem to relish overlooking, and that make Christianity the strictest of the "top 3." (1 John 2:4)* (James 3:1)

There are those, reading as you are, my words, who believe in their hearts that I am "probably one of those "religious fanatics, (ever notice you can hardly read the word Christian, in the press, without it being followed by a judgemental term, such as, "right wing," "fanatic," or "fundamentalist?"

Keep in mind that, "atheists never have Holy Wars!"

I hope you've gotten something with which to continue your pursuit of the subject that has been of the most interest to mankind since he began, and that takes, literally, a lifetime to "master." You can have a Masters degree in something, but can you master it?

There are those who say they've been X number of years "in the church," therefore, their Christianity should be beyond question, as though sleeping every night in the garage will make one a car!

Some say, "I'm a Christian, but I don't go to Church every week, I don't read the Bible, much," etc. This is like saying, " I'm going to be in the Army, but I'm not going to wear that uniform, I'm not getting up at 05:00am," etc. Well, then, I submit that, if you're not following the teachings, rules, customs, mores,...YOU'RE NOT!*

We don't really believe the Protestants and Catholics in Ireland are killing each other for religion, do we? Both of these read the Book which tells them not to do what they are doing. Gee, it must be political, after all. But, it certainly is convenient to place it all on "the Bible," thus, beyond criticism, if everyone can do what's right, in their own sight.

"God, only knows!" (rambling is done, thank you)

Respectfully,
Michael aka Wildfire_2531

Because they want to think there is nobody greater than themselves. Plus they want to be able to live dishonest and immoral lifestyles without feeling guilt or worrying about the consequences.

Someone wrote this in a similar response:..

"non believers have demons living in them, and it's the demon that reacts.

they can't live in a body with God, so they look for the ones that have no protection, and make it their home. "
