I have tomato's that seemed to have been cross polinated with crab apples.

Not possible. Tomatoes are self-pollinating; occasionally they might cross pollinate with another variety of tomato, but not with another species. If you have several kinds of tomatoes in your garden, this is what might have happened. Growing conditions can also affect the shapes of fruits and vegetables. You should see some of the potatoes I've dug!!

My beefsteak tomatoes cross polinated with cherry tomatoes. I got a huge tomato on one side with bumps all over the other side. It won a contest at a fair for "mutant tomatoes".
