Pythagoras, It all boils down to the Pythagorean Theorem really!

a^2 + b^2 = c^2

Change:
a=x
b=y
c=d

x^2 + y^2 = d^2
d = sqrt( x^2 + y^2 )

(x and y represent the horizontal and vertical changes)
