Teen canteens started back in the 1940s and were very popular with teenagers (and their parents!) because they offered a safe venue for young people. Liquor was banned at the teen canteens, which focused mainly on dancing, and as a place to meet people.
Unless things have changed drastically, that's what you do today. Dance, enjoy the music, and meet friends, in a safe and friendly environment.
