Goethe was a very famous German writer (it's pronounced Gurter BTW) and he wrote a play about Faust, the man who sold his soul to the devil. In the play, the devil is called Mephistopheles

Goethe's Mephistopheles is about the devil. I found this book hard to read in my youth, but I stayed with it & I'm glad I did. It is one of the most difficult but worthwhile books I ever read. Persistance paid off for me while reading this book.
