If you're going as a student there, only O2 will give you a mobile connection without a credit card, even with a credit card students have kept failing credit checks which Orange or any network carries out prior to clearing your connection.

When it comes to phones, O2 and 3 are the first to get the latest handsets onto their network, and O2 has got cheaper rates for calling and SMSing other countries including India

O2 charges 16p per international SMS which is the cheapest by far, all other networks charge anywhere between 20p to 30p.

Coverage of O2 is unmatched since it kept getting a signal through a cross country rail trip where 3 and Orange failed, the only other network which matches O2 is Vodafone.

Plus O2 sometimes doesnt lock their handsets which makes it easier to carry back to India once you finish your work/studies, I had an unlocked 6630 from O2 which worked great, my friends on 3 had to sell their phones since 3 refused to unlock their handsets unless the contract was over.
Plus 3 loads phones with their own customized firmware which is slow and disables some features...

So finally this is my rating.

1) O2
2) 3
3) Vodafone
4) Orange
5) T-Mobile
