I'd say it's a mix of several sub-genres of Metal. I can hear influences of Black Metal, Melodic Death Metal, Thrash/Speed and Power Metal in their music. Why not just let them be Children Of Bodom and forget about the labels? And if you can't, well then you can just call them Metal or Heavy Metal, because they play Metal that's heavy. So what if it's vague! They're surely not just straight Death Metal, even though they are often labelled as such. At best they'd be Melodic Death Metal, but then you'd have to compare them with the likes of Dark Tranquility (my personal favorite in that sub-genre), Soilwork (my 2nd favorite), In Flames (actually, plenty of similarities here), At The Gates, etc. when there're many obvious differences, especially because of the very noticeable Power Metal influence in COB.
