First off, I go to a pretty big school (upwards of 40 thousand people here), and basically, all I really know are some of the people on my floor, my roommate, and a few other people, including some people who I went to high school with. I was wondering, other than joining organizations (cause I'm already gonna be on to that), how I could expand my little network.

It sounds like you're already doing a lot, especially if you're planning on joining some organizations. Don't go places and do things you aren't interested in, just for the purpose of meeting people. Join organizations and participate in activities and hobbies that you are naturally interested in. This way, you will meet plenty of people and you will already have something in common with them.

Be patient and enjoy yourself. It takes time to meet people and form relationships. Just do what you enjoy doing, and I'll bet that in couple of months you will have more friends than you probably even have time for.

Good luck. I wish you the best.

You can start by going to student government meetings, or other social activities, join a inter-mural sports group in which some college athletic department have, the literature club, hanging out at the student center as well, but in my opinion the more people you know and associate with the more problems will come, college is for getting your education, less friends you have more time you have to study, and get your work done. Yes it's cool having friends and being well known. Select your friends wisely, "I mean wisely," make sure you pick people who into the same things you are, you don't want to select knucklehead's, or people who into getting drunk, drugs and into other negative extra curriculum. Take your time and enjoy you and friends will find you.

p.s.

hang out with the nerds and geeks, (no offense) they are the best when it comes down to study groups, and notes!

Get a job, paint the town red, talk to other classmates. They can introduce you to others. Believe me, it's not that hard. With 40 thousand people, 'specially.

I try and form study groups.....talk to those who sit around you in class and ask to swap phone numbers in case your absent....or they're absent...class is an easy place to start conversations talk about class content, teacher, the amount of work, yadda yadda yadda...just get there a little early so you're not talking when the teacher is!

Look in the local paper or campus paper for events that sound fun or things you're interested in. Talk to your classmates. Be nice to people :)
