that i just got my hands on for free - it has some wear on the finish and some minor scratch damage I wanted to either paint it or strip it down and put a stain on it. I have never done this type of work before and i wonder what would be the best approach.

Thanks! :)

Ps. I dont know what type of wood it is (dont know if that makes a difference) its lighter color though

sand it down to the wood evenly, use a heavy grit sand paper like 80 or a hundred grit, to remove the finish that's on it now, then use a less grittier sand paper somethin like 120 or 150, to give it a better sanded finish, then stain, let dry, then use a poly top coat to seal an protect it

I would sand it down then use a stain - if you don't like the results, you can always paint over it - rather than vice versa, which you could not put stain over the paint.

I would strip it and stain/polyurathane it. Paint doesnt always turn out too good

You can use a liquid stripper or heat gun to get the finish off. Please use caution when using this stuff it's very nasty!! Make sure you use a mask, gloves, eye protection. If you get the finish off and don't like the way it looks just paint it. Do a faux finish, I think them look nice.
