Ok, I know someone who claims that they miscarried at 22 weeks. They claim they were having pains & bleeding, went to the hospital, and the doctors put her to sleep, this is all she remembers. I believe she traveled to a state that allows late abortion, and aborted the baby. My question is what happens if a baby is truely miscarried that far along? Do the doctors just put you to sleep, and when you wake up the baby is not in your belly?? Please clear up any confusion that I have. Thank-you.

When a baby does abort itself that far along it is called stillborn I know of these places that do perforn late abortions but never 22 weeks it is possible that the baby died in her womb it is sad that it happens but a girls reaction is what you have to go on. If she is very emotional about the experience. and seeking support or closing herself off to everyone then it is most likely what happened. I can tell you that I do not remember most of my hard labour with my son because of medications that were allowed to me. at 22 weeks she would have to have been induced into labour and deliver the dead baby with assistance. I would say that if she did actually have her baby die then it would be a time for many drugs to subdue her and memory loss is understandable, at 22 weeks she would have felt the baby kick and move and to have that gone is sometimes too emotional to cope with. You need to be supportive If it was your baby then take care of her. I have lost a baby and being misunderstood and misunderstanding of why it happened causes a lot of added pain and suffering.
If you find that she has no feelings in regards to losing this baby whether she wants to convince people that her story is what happened then maybe she did abort it because of confidenciality nobody will ever know what is the truth

In the State of Oregon you have up to 23wks to abort. But that costs an insane amount of money. Chances are she really did have a miscarriage. Every hospital has their own policies on how to handle different situations. The hopsital she went to may decide to put miscarrying mothers to sleep while they deal with what's going on. It probably makes it easier especially if she's hysterical. Or they may have given her a sedative so that she could still "participate" (most hospitals need the mother's participation to help push out the fetus) but not freak out. So she might not remember the whole thing, and only remembers waking up later. Either way, it's her business and it's probably not a very happy subject for her. I would leave her alone about it unless it DIRECTLY concerns you ie. you're the baby's father.

How sad. Either way; abortion or miscarriage. I don't know of any state that allows such late abortion...unless the baby is already dead inside. In that case, it could have been induced labor and delivery and yeah since the baby was already dead, she could have been put to sleep....or even a c-section but you'd have stitches and scars from that....Did she ask to see the baby...many times a mom will want to see the body and plan a funeral for a baby that died inuterine. Can you find out which hospital this took place in and if you're the dad or parent of this girl you may be able to find out more info. Also, check surrounding states and see what their abortion laws are and investigate a time frame.....was she missing for 2 or 3 days??

Late term miscarriages do happen. It's called premature labour and, if you're lucky, it happens after week 26 when the baby can be saved. It is common in mothers under 20, over 35, those who have recently has viral infections or undergone a badly-performed amniocentisis.

They may have put your acquaintance to sleep in order to stop the contractions. Either that, or they gave her a shot just to stop the contractions and she passed out in panic, pain or from blood loss and remembers nothing because she has had a completely awful nightmare of an experience.

I certainly hope "this person you know" has real friends and a loving family to support her through this tragedy. If everyone around her is involved in the malicious gossip that your question reveals, then she is going through a horrible loss on her own.

Honestly I've been there and since you can't abort the baby due to the fact that you are too far along the only thing your Dr. can do is either send you into labor OR give you an emergency C-section.... So my thought is she was never pregnant.

NO!! I don't know what state she is in, but when you are that far along you have to give birth. The baby is at least one pound and 8-10 inches long. The only way it could happen the way she said is if she labored for days and days and she could not deliver vaginally, then yes they would go in and remove the baby. But believe me they would try to get her to deliver vaginally first for quite some time before the doctor would do that.

I don't know of any state that allows you to have an abortion that late but you can miscarry that late so if she was having pains and such she probably did miscarry

well if she did have a miscarriage with alot of pain in bleeding. if the baby wouldnt come out on its own, (which i think would be hard at 22 weeks) the they might have had to surgically remove it so she wouldnt get a really bad infection.

im not sure though.

Not sure....You should just trust her and leave her alone about it......she told you what she wanted you to know...is she a minor? if not then let it go....The drs could of given her something for the pain.....and she drifted off.....though i would just be her friend through this right now and not try to be A "PI"

also i think most places wont abort a baby at 22weeks...thats pretty far along.......though i dont know i never have....

I think it is more possible that she miscarried, but one problem I've never heard of them putting you to sleep during a miscarriage.
