Hey all, I have a hardware question. I have a laptop that might be overheating, the reason I say MIGHT is because I don't really notice much of a performance hit when the computer starts to get hot (yes burning hot).

My system BIOS (which cannot be updated any further), does not actually list a core temp, or anything else that has to deal with the measurement of the software.

My question is, since the heat seems to come from the BOTTOM of the system, does anyone know of a type of hotplate (basically i would put the system on the plate and it would give me a readout on the temp) that I could use?

I would personally like something that interlinked with the system in some way, since I am a computer programmer I was thinking I could make (or even download if programs exist to shut down in cases of extreme heat) a program that shut down the system when it reached a certain temp.

Any advice would be helpful.

Please do not answer with advice on how to solve the overheating problem, as

You didn't say what laptop you have.

If you have a Dell Inspiron/Latitude. This utility will tell you all your fan speeds, cpu, gpu, hard drive, memory, and chipset temperatures.

Then there is Throttlewatch, which lets you know if your cpu is being throttled due heat.

I would just like to let you know, I have a laptop with the same problem, TE2100 by Toshiba, with the same problem. Although the BIOS does not display the temperature, it does have a capability to shut itself down when the temperature reaches dangerous level.

You might want to research your laptop's feature before you do, possibly, a redundunt work.

EDIT
If you want to measure on temporary basis, you can use the inferad thermometer available at many places including Sears.

If you want to measure continously, you'll need a thermister type probe with an interface. Look here:

If this ever happens you probable have it on carpet or fabrics... you could the two hit upon a properly ventilated stand or use an attachment stand that has a fan... Very low priced 10$ on eBay or an public sale internet site, double that for the time of shops... Your fan might additionally no longer be working precise or could be basically undeniable old too vulnerable... you could the two get it replaced or basically raise up the keyboard part and fan including your hand each 20-30 minutes to sidestep this concern... desire I helped!!XD

A digital meat thermometer will work. The one I have has a probe that can be stuck into meat with the main unit outside the oven. It reads from below O degrees C to about 400o C. They are avaliable from Lee Valley tools.
