I honestly think it would be Russia. But I'm interested to know what other people think.

Okay, the reason I personally think it won't be the U.S. is because our equipment won't stop exploding and malfunctioning.

Wouldn't it be great if this happened soon! But the chances are very much against it happening any time in the near future. I don't expect humans to be on other planets to create a colony for many decades or even hundreds of years. In order to get a colony going on Mars (which is really the only choice) we would have to move a huge amount of equipment there -many, many tons of supplies and machinery. And we would have to learn much more than we know now about how to keep humans healthy in space. We do not even know yet whether a human could survive the radiation that would be encountered during the long trip to Mars. This would be gigantically expensive. No one country, even the USA, which is much richer than Russia, could afford it.

You might remember that a couple years ago President Bush suddenly announced that the USA should send an expedition to Mars. Then after that you didnt hear anything about it? That's because one of his aides tipped him off that the smallest possible temporary expedition would cost over $450 billion and that the NASA expert space medicine doctors believe the crew would all arrive dead (because of the high energy solar particles they would be blasted with.)

It might be possible to set up a colony on the Moon first. Even though there is no air there and possibly no water, it is so much closer, and the trip is so much shorter, that maybe by 2100 or 2200 we will have a small number of humans living there. This is discouraging, but I dont know of any evidence that suggests that we will be going to the planets to live any time soon.

The three main up and coming space-exploration organizations come from the USA, China, and Europe.

Europe isn't as well organized, unified, or well-funded on a continual basis, so they are out as being the first. The Chinese have a program that could be a force to reckon with in the coming decades, but have a lot of ground to make up. Russia has to get back on their feet before they can even think about maintaining a coherant agency; they sponsor space tourism just to get $20 million a pop!

That means the USA is in the lead. President Bush announced in 2004 that it was his directive to go back to the Moon and then onto Mars, so we're the first with a challenge to colonize the Red planet. And to the gentleman who earlier claimed that we've abandoned the idea, Boeing just won a contract from NASA to develop the first rockets to take the first unmanned probes to the Moon in 2011 so we can start getting ready for scientific landings and permanent settlers. We're finally on schedule to have humans land on Mars in 2025 if all goes well.

The USA is geared up to be the leader in space exploration over the Chinese for the next two decades, which means you can expect the first Martian colonists to be USA - sponsored. Once we hit 2030, though... watch out for the Chinese. We might be first, but they might eventually be bigger.

I'm afraid Earth will not make to commitment necessary to colonize anywhere off your planet. Over the centuries, your planet was a curious place to visit once or twice and was not considered very interesting . Sure, your wars showed us how undeveloped you are as a species and your infantile,(in cosmic terms) dependence on god concepts does not bode well for you. We are now showing an interest in you because it is not often that we get to observe a species commit suicide. You are so close to maturing as a sentient species and it will be a shame to see you kill yourselves. There are just not enough of you becoming rational enough to force the issue. You let the least among you determine your fate, so be it.

Russia's record outside of earth orbit is almost non existent..
The US probably has the greatest techonology & experience at this time but we are still a long way from establishing a real colony...
I don't see a real colony on Mars for at least 50 yrs...
I suspect it will be a multinational effort...

By the time man reaches its capability to travel to anhoter inhabitable planet, the most probable thing is that racial o country divisions won´t be an issue. Surely that mission would be a joint venture by several countries.

Russia can't afford it. They have capability and know-how but no moolah.

I think it depends on when. I bet you it is at least 100 years away. If it is to be anytime soon it could only be the US or a joint effort.

IF by some miracle we could accomplish this by cooperating as a race and not as individual nations, there's no limit as to what we could do. No one nation will be able to do it alone.
