There is currently no national language but I guess the government is currently working on making English our national language.

Wikipedia says the Senate voted on an amendment that would declare English the national language. (immigration reform bill S. 2611) It passed the Senate in May 2006 & now goes back to the House of Representatives.

English is the language spoken by most Americans. However, it has never been officially declared that it is the national language. There are bills in Congress right now that, if passed, will make English our official language.

When my sister was in London about ten years ago, she was told very pompously that Americans do NOT speak English. I asked her if she asked the man what he thinks we speak. She said that she decided that she better leave it alone.

What made it so funny was that, at the same time, an Aussie friend was in England. She was also given the "you don't speak English" message loud and clear. Brits are very particular about what they consider to be "their" language. In reality, there are more similarities than there are differences in how we speak.

The US is one of the few developed nations that does not have a national language. This is very costly. Any persons who immigrate here do not need to learn a specific language. So ALL government agencies are required to provide translations/interpreters for them at their request in whatever language they choose. Bills have been introduced many times (there is one now) for making English the offical national language of the US but they always die.

Technically, there is no declared national language of the US although most people believe it is English. However, there is no law that says it is. And, you do have to know how to speak and communicate in English when becoming an American citizen. Actually, what we speak here isn't English - its American. True English is spoken in England where they say things like "lift" for elevator, "bonnet" for the hood of a car and so on. We then, speak a bastardized version of true English.

Actually there was a oral vote taken at the First Continental Congress. the deciding vote for English was cast by a German.

However there was no America at that time only the early stages of a Proto Government.

I wonder if those men at the time thought that in 200 years people would become so confused as to their National Identity that they would not know what to speak.

There is no "national" lanuage. There has never been an official language in the US. However, English is the most spoken language in the USA. Also, there are people who want an official language in the US and the language they want to use is English.

There actually is no National language of the US (atleast at the federal level), but there has been movements to formally make English the US's national language.

There should be no official national language in America? Are you serious? So having a national language violates our freedom? How exactly does it do that?

The U.S.'s most common language is English (there is currently no official language), though there are many "dialects" or distortions of English, depending on the area. For example, people on the West Coast speak differently than people on the East Coast ("soda" versus "pop"), Southerners speak differently than Bostonians, and so on.
