In football, do special teams yards count towards total yardage or individual yardage?

Say someone returns a punt for 53 yards. does that count towards their total rushing yards (and the team's total rushing yards?)

No, it is counted as individual punt return yards, but it is counted as total yards for the team at the end of the game.

No.
They are counted as return yardage, either punt return yards, in your case, or kick return yards.

You'll see it broken out separately in the box scores too.
