Go slow and build up your comfort with it. Once the bottom is beyond your reach, the depth doesn't matter.
Realize that you can always float on your back for hours if necessary.

Have a friend who is able to swim teach you to float on your back or do backstroke. Once my leg started cramping in the middle of the pool and I swam backstroke back to the side.

start with a bathtub.. then go further in to a shallow pool.. then get a friend to accompany you into the deep pool!

Learn to scuba dive and just get used to the feeling. After a while it won't bother you.
