Hereitable information is another term for genes. when Mendel discovered genes he called them "heritable units," because they are passed down from parent to offspring. They direct the development of an organism. Genes govern the cells in which they reside through the proteins they encode. In multicellular organisms, they control the development of the individual from the fertilized egg and the day-to-day functions of the cells that make up tissues and organs.
