We had Verizon and weren't happy at all with the service. There were many places 'out of network coverage', although they should have been in the coverage.
When we decided to lease a place in Florida for six months, we asked many people about Cingular. (The service was so bad with Verizon, we paid the $175 for early cancellation).
One other thing........we do travel quite a bit and spend a lot of time out in the Gulf, and with Cingular.....no problems, no matter how far out we go. You cannot get that with the other providers. Believe me, you don't want to get caught 25-50 miles out on the water without a usable cell phone, in addition to a radio.
We now have Cingular and with family plan, we are actually saving on our plan, and are extremely happy with their service. I've not personally had one dropped call. Most of our friends have them and of course, mobile to mobile calls don't count toward the total. The best part of the service are the roll over minutes.
There are so many brands of phones out there and I'd look at the specification on different ones, just so you'll get one with more power. Compare these phones and get the best. There is a good reason these companies give you freebies. They normally are not all that strong with signals.
One other suggestion you may want to consider, even with your cell phone, would be a CB radio, just in case of emergencies. You can always get someone to come to your aid with one.
We spend quite a bit of time traveling and also out in the Gulf of Mexico. We have never had a problem with Cingular. It's great to know you can contact someone in case of emergency and your radio would go out for some reason. It's a great back-up.

I use all the major wireless carriers in South Florida. My personal experience is Verizon has the best coverage.
Consumer reports also rated Verizon as the overall best service in the United States.
The LG VX 8300 is a overall good phone with features and service.

I am a 48 state and Canada and the phone service i am with provide me nationwide coverage. As with all cell companies you will find dead zones. But with the service I am with it's by far the best service I have been with. I get phone service in all 48 states and even is Canada with very few dead zones. You can't be afraid of things that may happen or allow things of chance to run your life. No cell phone company is 100% and if that is what you are looking for, you will never find it but the best one is Cingular.

You'll probably get a ton of different answers on this question... cause they all claim to have the best. Personally I've had no problem with Verizon Wireless except for when I'm driving way out in the middle of nowhere. But I figure the best two are Verizon and Sprint... I guess you just need to figure out where you'll be driving most and check the maps of their coverage areas...
for Verizon... http://www.verizonwireless.com/b2c/CoverageLocatorController?requesttype=NEWREQUEST
for Sprint... http://www1.sprintpcs.com/explore/coverage/CoverageInfo.jsp

me and my fiance both have nextel phones and havent had a single problem with them. we both travel a lot and have only experienced patchy or low signal (that may or may not sometimes drop a call) spots while driving through some parts of a reservation in arizona. i've had my nextel for almost 4years now and couldnt imagine being with another provider.
