Owning a pet raccoon requires a great deal of investigation and consideration. The laws vary state to state – some allow ownership (unlimited), allow ownership with permits, do not allow ownership, allow only bred ownership, and/or allow only orphaned ownership.
Part of the legal issue in ownership is due to the fact that raccoons can carry rabies and distemper. Both can be vaccinated against, but the laws typically do not differentiate between wild and pet raccoons; if your pet bites someone they could be confiscated and tested for rabies which would be the end of your pet. Raccoons can also carry Baylisascaris procyonis, a roundworm, which can be transmitted to other mammals (including humans). It can cause problems with the central nervous system, blindness, and death. Prevention of the roundworm is possible, but requires strict diligence in application.

We have two pet raccoons.. We love them but they bite alot more then the ones we had in the past, just had one at a time previously. But they are totally fascinating creatures to have. The worst part is them trying to get into our Land Hermit Crab tanks and getting them.. lol..

Alot of states they are illegal to have as pets so best for people to know the rules and regulations in their areas before they get some. Be a shame for the raccoons to be killed just because people had them as pets that shouldnt.

Raccoons are a carrier of the rabies virus. There is no proven effective vaccine for raccoons. That is why they are illegal. My in laws had one for 3 years, it reached sexual maturity and turned out to not to be a good housepet. They live wild, let them! Sooner or later you will discover that they are not for house pets. If you live in an urban area, let it live wild and monitor it's health and care for it as you would any other wildlife-from a distance.
Good luck!

I like Raccoons, there quite smart and very sneaky. From what I have head, they dont make the greatest pets because of there inqusitive nature. Hopefully you have a big cage or something similar to keep it in. Personally, I coudn't keep an animal in a cage. Whatever you do, if you dont decide to keep it, dont just release it back into nature. It will suffer a cruel fate.

They are adorable looking but the only experience I have had with them personally was when they kept rolling up my fresh green sod loking for grubs. We had to rent one of those humane cages to capture them and they were not too happy. They hissed and bared their teeth and jumped at us. We let them go a few blocks away in the wilderness so we could get that grass rooted. I remember reading a story about a pet one in the Reader's digest when I was a kid and they sounded really smart and that if you started with them when they were a baby that you could probably domesticate them nicely.

My uncle used to have raccoons for pets fairly often. They reach a certain age and become very aggressive and mean. They are not good pets.

Many of them carry a roundworm parasite that can be potentially deadly to humans. I don't like them but I would never harm one. I just don't want them coming around my home. We have alot of wild ones around here that tear up gardens and lawns, kill cats and scatter people's garbage. They can be pretty vicious. I've chased quite a few off my deck and out of my yard.

well, i personally think guys adore them. mainly cause they are to afraid to show they like them. come on, do you think a guy would actually say, " awww look at that cute little fury raccoon," no you will never hear that from a guy, but you might hear this, " aw dude run that ugly little rodent over." and u being a women, (like me, i just have a good mind for these questions!) wont so they will thank god, in their mind u didn't run that cute rodent over.
