Personality sells more than anything. Especially if it is something people will come back for. Be happy, friendly and polite even to the ones who make you scream.

Opening the stall is just a procedure. You need to work out ways to drive traffic (customers) to you. A kid I know sells what pharmacies sell and he gets customers by making coupons with special offers and dropping through letter boxes locally. His mother was a bookkeeper and she did all of his accounts. Get yourself an independent bookkeeper to stay ahead of the tax man because I saw a trader go bust after a year because he did not keep his receipts and the VAT people billed him for £100,000 that he did not have.

As a market trader you need reliable suppliers but never forget the profit isn't in the selling. It's in the buying. Get around manufacturers of your products and buy up job lots of old stock or seconds (that's how Tesco started!). Put another question up on "Answers" that tells people what product group you are in. You need to get tips where to go for seconds and job lots - but don't buy them all on E-Bay!

And then there is, as already mentioned above, personality. Be memorable. Wear a unique hat; perform extra services to delight your customers; always be polite and flatter customers who might need cheering up; don't quibble if they want to exchange goods and always close the sale: "Shall I wrap it for you, ma'am?"
